CASE STUDY
Daimler Driver’s Lounge
Challenge
Provide primary design for driver’s lounge area in Daimler’s 38N premium, second generation Cascadia. Worked as resident engineers with Daimler’s internal team to develop several ready-to-install components for their premium cab option.
DESIGN & ENGINEERING
Utilized FEA, moldflow analysis as well as design test methods to predict part performance characteristics prior to production
SOURCING AND ASSEMBLY
Aesthetic specs to match mating injection molded components.
Overview
Penda acted as the lead engineering group for design-to-spec and testing of all parts designed.
FINISHED COMPONENTS
- Lower bunk
- Upper bunk
- Table System Assembly
- Steel seating substructure and shrouding
- Steel-tubed substructure to support Lounge seating
- Color-matched TPO shrouding
Specifications and Solutions
LOWER BUNK
Featuring twinsheeted, color-matched HDPE including internal support structure to 500 lb load deflection. All necessary cables, lights, latches were included to allow the bunk to be fully functional.
UPPER BUNK
ABS skin/ foam construction to meet Daimler 500 lbs. load deflection specs. Cables, lights, latches to allow the bunk to allow for full functionality.
TABLE SYSTEM ASSEMBLY
Retractable steel support structure designed to meet Daimlers specifications. Included custom milled table top.
Results
Because of Penda’s engineering expertise and relationship, we were trusted to work as an extension of Daimler’s engineering group to develop, propose, test and produce all parts in the Lounge.
